Maths areas
At St Augustine’s, we have inviting and stimulating maths areas in each classroom, filled with resources and equipment for the children to explore and use during their learning and play. Some of these resources are available for the majority of units and some are directly linked to a particular concept. These are concrete objects designed to help learners develop number sense and a deeper understanding of maths concepts and models by having something hands on to work with. These areas also include reading books linked to mathematical concepts, such as time, days of the week and times tables. This helps children to see the link between maths and reading and the importance of both skills aiding their success.
We also have an outdoor classroom where the children can learn with their teacher and then continue their learning with their friends during playtime opportunities that day. EYFS have access, throughout their school day, to a range of maths equipment and activities in their outside area also. This is a vital step for children to understand the link between maths inside the classroom and seeing how it can be used it in the real world.
