Music, Art & Design and Drama play a large part in the children’s time here at St Augustine’s.
Music and Drama
At St. Augustine’s music tuition is funded for all of our pupils in Class 2 and Class 3. They are taught by a music specialist who can provide in-depth knowledge and skills to ensure the very best music education for our children. In the lessons the children will be learning about the rudiments of music and singing new songs. In Class 2, the children learn to play the glockenspiel and in Class 3 the children learn how to play the violin and cello!
We also offer the chance for our children to show their new-found skills by inviting parents into school for concerts or showcases. We also have the opportunity to perform in a local concert, hosted by Entrust, to celebrate our knowledge and skills developed over the year.
Singing is also a big part of our music curriculum with daily singing during worship plus many concerts which the children love to participate in throughout the year. Many of these have been for the parents, guardians and grandparents to also enjoy. These include: The Harvest Festival, singing for our friends from Burton Albion, Light Up And Sing at Christmas, Mother’s Day services and our annual school production and Oscars Celebration event, to name just a few! The children love these putting on these productions. It really helps our school unite and helps the children’s confidence grow. They are always inspiring, a pleasure to watch and to be involved with. We are always very grateful to the pupils and staff for all of their hard work and dedication in putting on these productions and performances and are immensely proud to be able to present them to the community.
Art and Design
Within the Art and Design curriculum at our school, we have carefully built upon core art skills and techniques from EYFS to LKS2. These consolidate children’s fine motor skills and allow them to develop as artists. The children are exposed to a variety of artists, sculptures, and designers to allow children to understand the development of art throughout history and to also study art and artists that had an impact on our local area. We ensure that children leave us with an appreciation and enjoyment of Art and Design.
In line with the aims of the national curriculum’s expectations, we have developed an art curriculum that allows all pupils to experiment and create art inspired by the work of great artists and to reflect children’s own creativity. Key art skills such as drawing, painting, and printing have been carefully mapped out throughout the whole school to build upon skills. Opportunities to evaluate and analyse others art and their own have been provided to allow children to form their own opinions on art. Children’s focus is drawn towards great artists, designers, and sculptures. Art vocabulary is used continuously and at an increasing standard, as children move throughout the school to allow children to discuss art.
