January 2024 Dentist visit-oral health
In Class one, then children have been learning about being healthy, including healthy eating, handwashing and oral health. This week, class 1 were very lucky to have visit from a parent who is a dentist!
During the morning, the children sorted foods that are good and bad for your teeth. We discovered that children should only be having 5 teaspoons of sugar a day! They learned how to brush their teeth properly and had a go using their own toothbrushes.
Everyone had lots of fun dressing up as a dentist and learning about the special role of a dentist.
We all got oral health goodie bags which included a tooth brush and toothpaste.
Careers Talks
We are passionate about adding enrichment opportunities for all our pupils as part of our inspiring curriculum. Alongside our ’50 things’, we are having careers days throughout the academic year. We feel these help broaden the children’s horizons, skills and thoughts about the future.
This week one of our parents Sian came into school to chat to us about her job as an anaesthetist. It was incredibly informative and interesting! The children loved ‘dissecting’ parts and learning all about the body and what Sian’s important job entails!

We also had one of our parents Mrs Lowrie visit us to talk about her work as a vet! The children loved this interactive talk and found it incredibly interesting! Thank you Mrs Lowrie for giving up your time.
We have already welcomed two visitors into school to talk about their current and past careers.
The children have met Keith Hollins our very own CEO of SUAT and Mr Rukas who is on our Local Academy Council and also a nurse. We have a police officer, paramedic, a banker, vet and three chaps from a local manufacturing business that are already booked for this term.
Police Careers Talk
Today (20th January), we have had a careers talk from our very own PC Amanda Hales! As you you can see the children really enjoyed the experience and asked many interesting questions! Mrs Hales has agreed to come back in the summer and bring a police car so the children can learn more about what it is the police do.
Following on from our talk last year about stranger danger, Early Years were extremely confident about what to do if they became lost! Well done Early Years! This also linked in fabulously with Early Years topic last year of ‘People Who Help Us’.
I think we may have a few budding policemen and ladies among us after today!
On Monday 26th April, we had a careers talk from Mrs Walker’s nephew who is an officer in the Royal Marines. He joined us via Teams to tell us about life as a Royal Marine Commando and why that was the career has he chosen. We learned all about the training that has to be completed to become a Royal Marine and what life is like on a daily basis. He was leaving the day after to embark on a 6 month tour on HMS Defender but due to security purposes, he wasn’t able to tell us where he was going or what he was doing… but he did mention Pirates! The children has prepared some fantastic questions such as:
- “What is the food like on board the ship?”
- “What do the badges on your uniform mean?”
- “How long did it take to train to become an officer?”
- “Who is your favourite Aunty?” Haha!
You could hear a pin drop in the classrooms whilst Jacob was talking and the children loved every minute! Jacob said that when he is back from his tour, he will come and visit our schools with some of his troop! We can’t wait!
