Summer
It was a brilliant and very busy end to our school year. The summer term is always full of fantastic learning opportunities and end of year celebrations. Our question this term was: ‘What is at the bottom of the garden?’ and in Class 3, we used this to focus of our Geography unit of ‘Rivers’. It has been very interesting to learn about the features of a river, where our rivers are; locally, nationally and internationally, and what life is like living near a river. We took the opportunity to visit one of our nearest rivers, The River Trent, at the Wolseley Centre and conducted some first-hand fieldwork to explore the differences and similarities between two water environments (the river and a lake). It was a beautiful day to get out and about and the children were able to put their knowledge to the test outside of the classroom!
In English, we explored ‘The Ever-Changing Earth’ as a link to many elements of our Science and Geography units. Through this book, the children have been able to explore narrative writing, list poetry and explanation texts. The children loved this book and how it brought to life some quite tricky scientific and geographical concepts, including the Northern Lights!
In Science, we have been learning about ‘Plants’. The children used their KS1 learning about the basic parts of a plant to look deeper at the reproductive parts of a flowering plant, how these parts are used in pollination and germination and how plants make their own food through photosynthesis. The children compared the things a plant needs to grow well by providing one plant with all it needed and another was deprived of light. They were amazed by the results of their investigation!
We have also been very busy learning about what it is like to follow God in RE, how to use spreadsheets in Computing, community and British Values in PSHE/RSE and Michel Keck’s animal collages in Art and Design.
All of this, along with Sports Day, play rehearsals and Oscars ceremonies – wow!
