Our Maths Scheme
We use the White Rose scheme of learning. Their motto is ‘Everyone Can Do Maths: Everyone Can!’ and we feel this fits with our school vision and values. It is split into small, logical steps used to help understand each concept at a deeper level. All children have the same opportunities to learn and the support to fully grasp concepts. They focus on making maths fun for children and helping them to find enjoyment in number problems. When children are engaged in learning and enjoying maths, that’s when the deep learning happens.
Maths is taught on a daily basis, whether this is through a maths lesson, morning consolidation activities or in another subject area. It is incorporated into a range of other lessons regularly. For example:
- Science – graphs, measurement, patterns
- History – dates, ordering numbers
- Design & Technology – weight, position, time
- Art – symmetry, shapes
- Literacy – reading and writing
Maths lessons:
- Children use a White Rose workbook for each unit of work, which includes a range of fluency and problem-solving and reasoning style questions.
- Children have their problem-solving and reasoning Maths book for the later part of the lesson. These also include Mimi questions in Key Stage 1.
- A smaller ‘warm up’ or ‘revision’ book for morning activities and Flashback 4 questions on prior learning is also used.
Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract:
At the heart of our mastery approach is the Concrete Pictorial Abstract (CPA) approach. Research shows that when children are introduced to a new concept, working with concrete physical resources and pictorial representations leads to a better understanding of abstract concepts. We use CPA throughout our schemes of learning.
- Concrete – ‘doing’ stage’ where concrete objects are used.
- Pictorial – ‘seeing’ stage where visual representations are used.
- Abstract – ‘symbolic’ stage where symbols are used. Children need a solid understanding of the previous two elements before moving onto this.
