Autumn 1
‘Why do we remember people?’ is our topic this half term. We have been finding lots of information about different occupations including doctors, nurses, vets, firefighters and police. We have been labelling our body parts, practising writing our names and we even had two special visits from a real-life doctor and vet! We had to create lost posters for Mrs Gilmour’s guinea pig, Sooty! Thank goodness Mrs Gilmour has so many wonderful children to help her!
In maths we have been exploring a range of mathematical apparatus to represent numbers including, Numicon, cubes, counters, numbers and five/ten frames. We are very confident at using these now!
During this half term, we have also been learning about Florence Nightingale, The Great Fire of London and explored famous artist Jackson Pollock!
We have had such a wonderful start to the year and cannot wait for more exciting learning after half term.
Autumn 2
Our topic for Autumn 2 is ‘Where on Earth?’ We have done so much amazing learning about the seasons, the world we live in and colour.
During the topic, we read some wonderful books which inspired our learning, including a book called ‘Leaf Man’. We went on an Autumn walk, collecting a range of leaves. Everyone created their own special Leaf Man designs and wrote postcards from our creations.
We also read the amazing and very popular story, ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’. Reading together, we performed the different parts of the story. We also changed some of the elements from the story and created our own descriptive word bank to develop our vocabulary. We made our own story maps and added labels to describe the areas.
Our artist of the half-term was Kandinsky. We studied his painting ‘Squares with Concentric Circles’ and was inspired to create our own interpretation.
In mathematics, we have been learning to subitise, finding 1 more/1 less of a given number and exploring pattern.
We also celebrated Bonfire Night and Christmas with more amazing learning and fun activities!
